Statuette mutinu bambaTéké

To Téké, the shape of the bilongo often indicates the function of the statue: statues mutinu bamba, as this one, have a cylindrical bilongo and are used to help the women during the childbirth; statues matomba have a bilongo in the shape of barrel which confers them an apotropaïque function whereas statues butti, with their lap cavity, represent ancestors.

Very old statuette mutinu bamba, wooden and diverse materials, typical of the ethnic group Téké of the Gabon.

Height: 47 cm, cracks of age (see photos).

Statues create by the artists Téké have shortened and slightly bent legs, lengthened trunk framed by arms folded in angles straight ahead (when they are not covered, as here, by the bilongo) and a big head carrying linear scarifications and a bard trapézoïdale. Their size varies between 15 and 80 cms. They can be used by an individual or by a quite whole community (Bibliography: The tribal art of Black Africa, p. 41-42).
